Replacing a UV Bulb

Updated: Aug 4

A UV or Ultra Violet bulb helps to keep green water at bay whether it is inside a UV clarifier unit or if the UV is inside a pressure filter similar to these Pondmax pictured above. The bulbs vary in wattage size so it is important to replace with the same bulb recommended for your system. Change your bulb about every year or so whenever the blue light is no longer visable. Discount UV bulbs may not last as long as the original brand that you purchased, so you may want to stick with the same branding.

Instructions Step by Step - Installing a UV Bulb:

1.      Turn Off / Unplug. Unscrew the power supply or ballast to remove the UV bulb

2.      Take Out Your Old Bulb, it is ok to touch the old UV Bulb

3.      Inspect Your Quartz Sleeve. Gently clean it with a soft cloth and white vinegar if needed. Was water inside? If so, make sure you tighten the outer nut snug and that the O ring is in good shape and determine that your power supply is working properly.

4.      Purchase Your Bulb, Replace with the Same Size Bulb, only replace the quartz sleeve if cracked.

5.      New UV Bulb- do not touch it with your bare hands! Use gloves, use a rag or paper towel when handling and installing the bulb.

6.      Carefully install the UV bulb and make sure the pins are fully inserted, it will click.

7.      Insert the quartz sleeve over the bulb, you can touch the quartz sleeve with bare hands.   Tighten the nut and don’t forget the O ring that keeps it waterproof.

8.      Put the power supply with newly installed bulb back into the UV clarifier unit or pressure filter. Then plug it in, make sure the blue light is on, and the bulb is working.
